As Slow as a Torpe-do
*Target in proximity.* Deep within, a rhythmic sound is being heard. *Target is approximately 30 feet and closing in.* The distance of recognition. The beat accelerates on a steady pace. *Target within 20 feet...* The rhythm goes faster... *...10 feet...* ...louder. Every pound is almost deafening to the ear. *...5 feet. Target locked... Error! system malfunction. Retreat! Retreat!*
Another white flag has been raised. Another opportunity, wasted. The epitome of all that he adores has passed him by, but he was betrayed by, literally, his own flesh and blood. Welcome, to another day in the life of a torpe.
It is natural for people to be reluctant about their emotions. What most people do when they are confronted with an emotional challenge is they face it. But for those who choose to flee, hide, or simply ignore their emotions, especially on a romantic level, the word torpe can be used to describe them. It is said that this word has no exact English equivalent. Some may translate it as shy, timid, constipated or even stupid. But none of those terms totally comprehend its meaning. Although used to a wide extent, torpe actually means something very specific. It originally refers to men who cannot muster up the courage to court the women they like. A torpe doesn't really aim very high in terms of standards, which is mainly based on personality. Still, it's as if what he pursues is something as unreachable as the farthest galaxy. Perhaps, what triggers this kind of perplexing behavior is the ultimate fear of rejection. But there are yet many more factors that contribute for a person's inclination to katorpehan. Also, these factors could very well vary from one torpe to another. Dwelling on its causes will not get us very far. It is the ways of a torpe which sets them apart from everyone and everything else. It is their characteristic which is worth writing a paper for. Just like the situation mentioned in the first part, the most important thing for a torpe is also the rarest occasion for him. Any form of interaction seems to be avoided by what seems to be either a reflex reaction or a self-generated repulsing energy. Every time that he sees his object of affection he gets excited and nervous at the same time. When she is near him, or if heaven permits, if she talks to him, our torpe has different options for ruining the god-given opportunity. A) He gets his tongue entangled on its own. B) He stands motionless as if trying to see if he has the power of invisibility. C) He looks away as if he has the peripheral vision of a horse with sight guards. D) He darts away at a mind-blowing speed. I know there are more things that can happen in this situation but these are just the most common. It may seem funny or even annoying to many, but for the torpe, it is most tragic. Regret haunts his soul and disappointment plagues his heart. He doesn't know why every time his crush is near he just wants to get away. Yet, ironically, being around her is all he dreams of. This now leads to the distinctive technique of torpes known as stalking. A torpe is like a satellite revolving around the being of his desire, making her the center of all his attention. He must always keep to a certain distance or else it would be the end for both of them or he would be a very lonesome spec, floating aimlessly in space. Stalking doesn't only require following the person, it also entails the torpe to gather all the information he can about the center of his universe. A torpe could be deathly shy towards his crush but he would use all of his advantages and connections just to know more about her. Also, another part of stalking is the anonymous giving. By using the information our torpe has gathered, he analyzes the likes and dislikes of his "goddess" and buys or makes gifts for her that he thinks she would be very much pleased with. And of course, he would give this on the special occasions like Valentine's Day, Christmas and especially on his well-researched and memorized date of her birth. Another technique wherein a torpe is a master in is the pasimple. Because it needs more courage and confidence in order to be executed properly, this practice is for the more professional torpe. The main purpose of this technique is to cover up the torpe's intentions by making what he do seem like a mere coincidence. This technique is more risky than ordinary stalking, but it allows the torpe to be a bit closer and even allow some kind of interaction between him and his crush. Ironically, even though how taxing these techniques may get, a torpe would do anything for the one he is in love with. His martyrdom and total sincerity amidst his sacrifices are what makes him have the votes of the people around him. The tragedy of his circumstance is what touches society and make people emphasize with him. They would want him to eventually be happy and sometimes they even get agitated for the slowness of his pace. But it the end, whatever happens, it all depends on him.
Many would think that a torpe is only for the male gender but as time grew on, so did the meanings of all Tagalog slang words - their meanings evolved and become inclusive of more and more ideas. The same applied for torpe, which started being used on women as well - for those women who were too shy or too timid to let a man know she likes him or at least give him a hint of her affections. One would say that the case of the female torpe is a more difficult situation to be in. We could all wish that we could be like Toni Gonzaga in the Sprite commercial wherein she just completely admitted: "I love you, Piolo!" But then if life was just that simple, I wouldn't be writing about any of these, now would I? First of all, being a female torpe is a more complex matter because many are still used to the idea of men making the first move. Women courting men? It's a fairly new idea and some are able to accept it. But some never find the heart to open up to this thought and the worst part is that many on the opposing side are those of the male population (mainly because of their macho bravado) except maybe for the torpe guys who would just be too happy to alleviate their sufferings. How could a girl profess her love for the guy of her dreams if it will be that same reason that could shun him away forever? It's almost like saying, "Rejection, anyone?" Also, one could take account of the always present judgmental society around. Even if she could have succeeded in the first part, with maybe a little reluctance on the other side, the negative aura of these people could just lead to countless tsismis or rumors about her and of her special someone. This sudden popularity, which will never be favored by a timid torpe, will just put too much pressure on the newfound relationship which could just easily break it apart, thus, making a small taste of bliss more agonizing for the burden of once again, an unreachable goal.
So how would all these end? The first kind is when our dear torpes have been awakened. It doesn't take a simple smack in the head for this to work, rather this awakening is provided to them by much encouragement and hope added with a bit of inspirational words and finally by accepting the feelings they had hidden deep within for so long. Soon they realize that it all comes down to a few minutes of their truest courage and their most hopeful sincerity. It is time to face the final do or die situation. This is the only thing that could remove them from their misery, even if it means risking it all and in the end finding nothing. But what if, what if it turns out to be something that they have been waiting for all this time? Finally the happy ending is at hand or should I say the happy beginning. This is what almost everyone looks forward to because it contributes a certain kilig or romantic factor brought about by the noble sacrifice of time and endeavors of our torpes and also brought about by too much anticipation due to the most often shorthanded efforts of these torpes.
The second conclusion of this dramatic saga is the negative side of the first one. Many won't be able to cope up after losing to the game of love. Some would opt for obsession, indifference, hatred, and even to fall deeper to the clutches of katorpehan. Only a few could survive this with their head held high especially for a torpe. No matter what this outcome would most definitely leave a scar in their hearts.
But then the worse kind of ending is never to be able to know the outcome. For those who never mustered up the guts to risk it all, the only reward waiting for them is regret. They would say that they would give their all for the ones they adore. So why not give it the final blow? For this I never knew what to answer and in the end, some words were never heard; some feelings never saw the light of day. In the end, everything was just gone; the next chapter never begun...
